Title: Oyabun Archiebald's Ear Worms
Post by: yale on October 14, 2003, 09:55:29 AM
<bgsound src="http://www.everything-space.com/attachments/Smlworld.mid">

Certain songs are considered WMDs due to their brain-destroying potential:  trapping your mind into an endless loop of humming the simple tune.

This is a thread dedicated to a particularly lethal branch of the Entertainment Universe.

I open this thread with the Ultimate in Horror: Disney's It's a Small World:

-- It's a world of laughter
-- A world of tears
-- It's a world of hopes
-- And a world of fears
-- There's so much that we share
-- That it's time we're aware
-- It's a small world after all
--- It's a small world after all
--- It's a small world after all
--- It's a small world after all
--- It's a small, small world

--- There is just one moon
--- And one golden sun
--- And a smile means
--- Friendship to ev'ryone
--- Though the mountains divide
--- And the oceans are wide
--- It's a small world after all
-- It's a world of laughter
-- A world of tears
-- It's a world of hopes
-- And a world of fears
-- There's so much that we share
-- That it's time we're aware
-- It's a small world after all
--- It's a small world after all
--- It's a small world after all
--- It's a small world after all
--- It's a small, small world
--- There is just one moon
--- And one golden sun
--- And a smile means
--- Friendship to ev'ryone
--- Though the mountains divide
--- And the oceans are wide
--- It's a small world after all

Er, living dead song that you can't get out of your head, that is...

Such as...

So many nights I sit by my window
Waiting for someone to sing me his song
So many dreams I kept deep inside me
Alone in the dark but now
You've come along

You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song

Rollin' at sea, adrift on the water
Could it be finally I'm turning for home?
Finally, a chance to say hey,
I love You
Never again to be all alone

You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song

You light up my life
You give me hope
To carry on
You light up my days
and fill my nights with song

It can't be wrong
When it feels so right
'Cause You
You light up my life

AAAARRRRRRGGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here's a small sample... careful!

Its important to note that these "Ear Worms," as kelly called them,  are not  ~bad~ songs.

In fact,  typically they are not.  They are usually quite pleasant simple melodies with an irresistable "hook."

The danger is that they trap themselves in your brain and force you to hum or sing the catchy tunes all day (and it is often contageous to others who hear you humming)

EXACTLY!

The whole time you are trying to balance the neutron flux on the planetary gravitation sequencers and avoid destroying the Earth's crust...

your brain is enlessly cycling: "We all live in a Yellow Submarine,... a Yellow Submarine,... a Yellow Submarine. We al live in a Yellow Submarine... etc"

Great song, but the world's fate depends on it not attacking your mind.

Another particularly dangerous specimen from Old Blighty is:

Hmm...

Then I would imagine that "Joy to the World" (Jeremiah was a bullfrog) would qualify?

*Ugh*

It is a bliss to know little about those songs.. :) AAARFRRRGHHH.. Just recognized it.. *wheep-wheep*

okay then.. time to strike back methinks..

It’s time to play the music.
It’s time to light the lights
It’s time to meet the Muppets on the Muppet Show tonight.
It’s time to put on makeup.
It’s time to dress up right
It’s time to raise the curtain on the Muppet Show tonight.
Why do we always come here
I guess we’ll never know
It’s like a kind of torture
To have to watch the show
And now let’s get things started
Why don’t you get things started
It’s time to get things started
On the most sensational, inspirational, celebrational, Muppetational
This is what we call the Muppet Show!

(Gonzo blows his trumpet - or at least attempts to.)

Ah well.. it still isn't .. *looks at Yale 'cos he once planted the seed of the song in his head* "Secret Agent Man"

I STILL have that song in my brain.. It is like a musical tumor that won't get out. Even now while typing this parts of it are getting through the mental containment field (.."There's a man who leads a life of danger. To everyone he meets he stays a stranger.." WHAARGH)

Adapting lyrics to fit this faul act of earworm infectioning: "They've given you a number,
and taken way your name brain "

Regarding "Yellow Submarine"

I have a recording of it - but this one is by The Leningrad Cowboys, with the Red Army Men's Chorus.   It is so weird that the ear-worm aspect is lost in the chorus!

Some can cause actual brain damage, like the Oscar Mayer weiner song. You know how it goes...dare I put it in your brain?
