BTW,could someone tell me why my little 'picture' won't show?(It's a link to a drawing somewhere). And where can I indicate my custom signature? So much questions,so little time........(Forgot to tell I am total windows-challenged!) Title: Vishniac Post by: Orstio on July 17, 2001, 02:58:00 PM Check the URL of your pic. Thank you very very much! And please accept my humble apologies for having been too dense to notice it was already there. It has been one of those days. Title: Re: The voyage still continues Post by: apollo2791 on July 17, 2001, 04:59:00 PM You've never been to Colorado? I have -- I used to live there.
Anyone want to here my life story? Well you're gonna anyway, at least it's short... Or not... I was born in Rochester, MN, and lived there until right after 2nd grade when my dad got laid off from IBM. We ended up moving to Longmont, CO -- an ugly little town that's growing way too quickly. Oh well, the mountains were pretty. And anyway, after being laid off of the first job he got there, he found a second one in that town, so we could stay there. Sometime during 5th grade, though, we decided we wanted to move back to Rochester -- lots of reasons, but one of them being that my older brother was a year away from high school and my parents wanted him to go to a Catholic high school (the nearest one was in Denver, but there's one in Rochester). So my dad got a job here and we moved back. And my dad, once again, got laid off. Again. Thankfully, that company that he quit from has a facility near Minneapolis, so he got a job there. Whew. So it's not exactly my life story, seems more like my dad's. Oh, and guess what Calli? My dad went to St. Olaf too -- a long time ago. I'm sorry, I think I accidentally drank something at Peter's bar that I shouldn't have. If you don't like me rambling on like this...then make sure that I can't get a hold of any of those, um, interesting concoctions they serve there! Title: Re: The voyage still continues Post by: esk2 on July 17, 2001, 05:03:00 PM sounds ok, but how about Nieizschien
Title: St Olaf Post by: calliarcale on July 17, 2001, 05:22:00 PM Your dad went to St Olaf too? Neat! And you're from Rochester originally? I like Rochester very much. It's a lovely town.
I'm actually a fourth-generation St Olaf student. My dad was class of '72, my mom was class of '73 and my grandma attended for three years back in the 40s before transferring to the University of Minnesota. (She wanted to go to the same school as her new beau, who is now my grandpa. ;) (http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/wink.gif );) ) So in honor of there being one other person on this forum who has actually heard of St Olaf..... [clears throat to sing] We come from St Olaf We sure are the real stuff Our team is the cream of the college's great! We fight fast and furious Our team is injurious Tonight Carleton College will sure meet its fate! Um ya ya, um ya ya Um ya ya, um ya ya Um ya ya, um ya ya Um ya ya ya! It's actually "Carleton College" in the sixth line regardless of who the team is actually playing. ;) (http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/wink.gif );) It's also the only school song that I'm aware of which is set to a polka beat. (Figures; them crazy Norwegian immigrants, donchaknow.) Title: PLC Post by: yales on July 17, 2001, 06:11:00 PM Having fun ON the computer does not REQUIRE it being turned on, but that metal can be pretty cold.

yale: considering the temps have been in the vicinity of 100degF in the shade, not counting heat index, and I just heard the weather report that we are 70% of air quality max poor, I just have one word for you: YEP. Title: Re: The voyage still continues Post by: apollo2791 on July 17, 2001, 06:31:00 PM Yes, and actually I've been to St. Olaf too -- my brother had a cross country race there. My dad was class of '77. It's funny -- some people I'm (barely) related to from Kansas were making fun of the way we talk! And when we went to D.C. for vacation, a waiter at Olive Garden asked if we were Minnesotans!!
Title: lonely Post by: payloadcontroller on July 17, 2001, 07:01:00 PM It's lonely here on the Bridge. I am the only being here. <sigh>

Post by: calliarcale on July 17, 2001, 10:14:00 PM TARDIS scanners perusing the Space Science & Astronomy board at uplink.space.com have detected what may be the first wave of a new MAJOR bozo invasion! The ancient evil has returned. So far, he has confined himself to a massive cut-and-paste of somebody else's work, but it's only a matter of time.
Yes, folks, that fervent proponent of the Vacky Vorld of Velikovsky has returned. Forged is back. To the more recent additions to the WAN crew, forged is not an enemy to engage lightly. He is impervious to reason and very very good at changing the subject. Recommend all WAN crew await captains orders before engaging this particular bozo. Title: H..e..l..p...m..e.. Title: More Toilet Humor Post by: archiebald on July 17, 2001, 10:32:00 PM In this time of potential doom, we must insist that all hands remain on the bridge, ready for action.
Not wishing to create any discomfort for the Captain and Crew by the extended shifts that this will create, I propose upgrading all seats as per this design. (http://www.easycarts.net/ecarts/terrylove/images/dbfirst.jpg) Note that thruster controls built into the side, allowing full control to be maintained even in mid-jobby. Archie Title: Re: The voyage still continues Post by: sunspots4ever on July 18, 2001, 01:26:00 AM In response to the esteemed Captain's invitation, I have transferred here, and request permission to come aboard.
The transfer required an alternate identity to be established, in the other dimension, I am known as "anna_s." In addition to the qualifications listed under "Introduce Yourself," I claim an overactive imagination, ability to research out bizarre bits of trivia, and a bottle of Napoleon brandy, which would of course be shared with shipmates. I would like a position as Ship's Librarian, aka "The Quiet One You'd Never Suspect, Until..." Respectfully Yours, Sunspots4ever Title: Forged, engage or not? Post by: vishniac on July 18, 2001, 03:51:00 AM Awaiting orders!!

forged is rather unique. He is a pre-teen boy with an amazingly good vocabulary and grasp of debating tactics. He could make a very shrewd politician someday, and I really hope that doesn't happen. He has a very poor grasp of science but a rock-solid faith in his own views. He loves to make people furious, and is very very good at it. When he last invaded the board, the only weapon that proved effective was ignoring him utterly. He thrives on attention. When he doesn't get any attention, he leaves. I have been with my crack team of developers for the past few days, and am happy to report that the latest weapon in the fight against bozo's is nearing completion. The Nobozo 1300 is currently in the testing phase. I have had a bit of trouble finding volunteers (understandably) but hope to have the project go beta within the next week. I shall keep you all posted. In the meantime, all weapons officers stand by for training materials which are being printed as we speak.[P]Peace out.
Title: Dingo Post by: gyrogearloose on July 19, 2001, 11:40:00 AM As the NoBozo 1300 will be our first attempt at non-consumable type Ia weaponry, I will need to confer with you on the design and possible implications.
Title: Mighty quiet on the main bridge today! Post by: gyrogearloose on July 19, 2001, 12:58:00 PM Just got back from the WANII, doing some preliminary weapons testing. I am currently awaiting results. TomSheehan, Ezrakind and PO were my subjects.

Gyro, using their own weapons against them... Peter Title: new weaponry... Post by: aaronofborg on July 19, 2001, 01:21:00 PM Any chance some Borg technology could be used? Maybe add some nanoprobes to the mix to assimilate any survivors of the blast... if they survived, they may be useful to the collective.
Title: Re: new weaponry... Post by: gyrogearloose on July 19, 2001, 01:49:00 PM Seemed logical to fight illogic with illogic. The results are not in yet, but preliminary reports indicate that the NoBozo 1300 should be quite effective in, if not eliminating, at least humbling said bozo's.[P]Time will tell.
Title: Well, I've taken a different tack Post by: skyjim on July 19, 2001, 02:32:00 PM Simply questioned the S/N ratio and asked how ANY conclusion was possible. I'd actually be thrilled to find unambiguous evidence of ETI in our solar system, but get tired of believers who see artifacts in every mesa and rockpile. I want people who have no preconceptions (who are the folks we're trying to protect from pseudoscience, right?) to think about it and get better at discriminating for themselves between evidence and belief systems.

Title: Battlestations! Post by: calliarcale on July 20, 2001, 04:49:00 PM space.com member vopp discovered the URL of the WANIII and has posted it for all to see. We may soon be boarded.

Post by: calliarcale on July 20, 2001, 04:50:00 PM Everybody, quick go to FreeSpace and start posting threads and responding to others in order to bury vopp's thread as fast as possible!!!
Title: Calli, sorry, Post by: skyjim on July 20, 2001, 05:18:00 PM but I don't see this as particularly threatening. It was inevitable once we started actively seeking members there.
Everybody here knows that people who the majority of current members would probably classify as bozos will show up. There are also appropriate means here to deal with those who violate the rules of the board. Basic containment is possible with the ability to move threads to appropriate subject areas. Really nasty people will quickly lose their posting priveledges. Not the cozy little club we started with, but we don't want to live in a bunker, do we? While it will make more work for the administrators of this board, surely this was anticipated. And, sorry, but before I read your posts through, I told the person to come on over, as long as he or she is prepared to be reasonable, and he or she might find more tolerance than anticipated. So let's PLAY NICE, OK guys? Logic, not insults. Please. Jim Title: You're right, skyjim. Post by: calliarcale on July 20, 2001, 05:38:00 PM I just wanted to avoid a flame-war. It appears that you and the other WAN crewmembers are doing an admirable job of responding appropriately and rationally to that thread, and it should not be a problem.

By creating a space-time envelope around the sector, I can then time-loo the quadrant's "littoral," so to speak, and put the uplink.space.com spacetime event into a Vortex embolism. This would stabilize the sector against practically anything.
On the other hand, if allowed to collapse, the singularity could be used as a duplicate Eye of Harmony, thus providing the WAN III with a theoretically infinite power source! I shall monitor the situation and explore both options for feasibility. Title: Out of Control Post by: Mons on July 25, 2001, 07:38:00 AM The whole sector over in Space.com is out of hand. I see no way to bring them back from the brink of disaster. I believe all we can to is pull back, set up the recording devices and analyze the collapse of Space.com. Is there anyway to estimate the chances of the Bozo Flux reducing itself before the implosion?

One of my more minor activities is to maintain the black hole at the center of your pathetic little galaxy. In the weeks that I have been absent from galactic center, major mass in-falls have created an unstable condition. It is necessary for the safety of the pathetic lifeforms strewn thru this low-rent spiral that the galactic core be quiescent. I am requesting shore leave for the next week to do the repairs. As a side benefit, I shall re-charge my EnviroSphere with gravitic potential energy. As of late, I have been utilizing the incredible chemical energy of EverClear for life-support and propulsion. This has had strange effects on others and lowered my already low coherence level. --- yale BTW - Clouds of some type of feathery material have been clogging my external intakes. One thing that I *have* noticed - there are more and more half-coherent poor typists with "theories" to expound. Phlogiston. Magic. You know, my opinion is that people like PO's having various different sites around have caused this current Bozo Infestation. No doubt he mentions he's dwelling there to other like-minded types and Hey! Presto! Mons has the right idea. Hey ho, to Peter's Bar we go... --Yev Oh, Yales? I put my two cent's worth in ,but I see people still insist on engaging ezrakind. It is getting worse over there, and WE are part of the nastiness if we continue mudwrestling with that type of poster. Ranters like ezra are plainly not credible posters and so I repeat my assertion that ignoring them is harmless. Just monitor. IMHO, It is the coherent bozos who are more likely to cause real mischief if they go unchallenged. Not a lot of choice about engaging in some of these cases, but even truly nasty types often lose interest if they are ignored. If you don't see responses to a bozoid, it probably isn't neccesary to jump in.
