Obviously not too many requiring site in NSW, Australia...but have a question (having just received this notification from ASNSW - Astronomical Society of NSW:  "The Public Liability Insurer for the ASNSW has advised that they will not be renewing insurance cover as they will no longer offer cover to clubs and registered societies.

"Efforts are being made to find alternative cover but with some difficulty...

"...ONLY members of the Soceity will be allowed to use the facilities at Crago Observatory and Wiruna.  Only members will be allowed to attend Technical and Ordinary meetings.  The intention being to limit our exposure to risk.

"Furthermore, members who choose to use the Society's facilities will be permitted to do so only at their own risk and provided thaty they sign a Release acknowledging they use the facilities at their own risk and releasing and indemnifying the Society or any member of the Society from an liability arising out of an event which causes the member injury loss or damage of any sort."

I guess this means they ain't liable for sommat like: "If you trip over anyone's tripod whilst running around and looking up...we ain't paying for any broken toes/noses"...  or..."If, whilst seeing some bright star/light you push your face hard into scope...which results in 'black-eye"...etc.etc.etc....

Anyone got more?  :rolleyes :rolleyes

My own club operated for years without liability insurance but finally purchased a policy last year.  Eventually, any group that does public outreach astronomy is probably going to need coverage for the person who trips in the dark and then sues everybody in sight.

I have recently joined a local astronomy club here in SE Louisiana, the Pontchartrain Astronomy Society, www. pasnola.org. This club has members from all over SE Louisiana, and southern Mississippi, and they are a really cool bunch of people. I have been having a great time being part of this club, and it is great to be pursuing astronomy with a bunch of like minded people. I have been to a couple of meetings and participated in an observing session at an observing site on the North Shore that is owned by PAS, that is accessable by PAS members only. So, if there are any ES members in the Gulf South region, you all may want to consider joining PAS. Check out the website, at the link I have provided.  Q
