Excerpts from [link=http://www.lateralscience.co.uk/ymboa/ymboa.html]The Young Man's Book of Amusement[/link] (1854).

Just one of the fascinating "weird science" entries at [link=http://www.lateralscience.co.uk/index.html]Lateral Science[/link].

;D [link=http://www.gizmology.net/lovecraft/works/c_d_ward.htm]H.P. Lovecraft at his finest![/link]

Speaking of chilling tales, who recalls (or has read) The Pillar of Fire by Ray Bradbury? I remember reading it when I was around 11 or so and being absolutely chilled to the bone.  There's this great line in it though where the main character goes to a library (the tale is set in the distant future) and asks for books by Lovecraft.  "Is that a sex manual?" the librarian asks.

Hey Sarah!  Good pic.  Funny to think though, of just how much anatomists and physicians must owe to the 'criminal classes'!  Medical science could never have advanced to the level we have it today without countless dissections and 'experiments' like the one done on the unfortunate Matthew Clydesdale.
