Did you know?

The Platypus is stranger than you think.

Platypuses have no nipples.  After the young hatch, the mother oozes milk from the pores all over her body.

The male platypus has a poison barb on the inside of its hind legs.  The purpose of this weapon is uncertain.

While often compared to the beaver, the platypus is only about 20 inches in length -- more comparable to the size of the muskrat.

The Platypus bill is actually just an elongated muzzle covered with much the same kind of tough skin found on a dog's nose.  This bill contains an electrically-sensitive organ that can detect the electrical signatures of the small aquatic animals it eats.

News Sources
« on: August 17, 2004, 01:58:25 PM »
Many of the major news sources such as CNN, BBC, MSNBC are often cited as biased and, worse yet, just flat out get the facts wrong.  So where does the informed person turn for reliable world news sources?   Please post some recommendations!

One should try a variety of news sources and compare.  Some will be more accurate than others.

Look under - Politics/Good sources of Political Info -
http://www.everything-science.com/components/com_smf/index.php?topic=2552.from0

I look at the following sources:

www.worldpress.org - World Press contains news articles from a broad spectrum from far right to far left and everything in between.

Try also - http://www.worldpress.org/gateway.htm - access to several hundred online services from the world's newpapers.

www.motherjones.com - Mother Jones is an independent nonprofit whose roots lie in a commitment to social justice implemented through first rate investigative reporting.  Mother Jones Magazine and Motherjones.com are made possible, in large part, by the support of the Foundation for National Progress and through donations from general public.  Conservatives consider this organization 'Liberal'.

www.axisoflogic.com -  Axis of logic claims to be "comprised of an all-volunteer group of writers and editors who are committed to publishing news and commentary that is often not presented in the major news outlets.

More description in - http://www.everything-science.com/components/com_smf/index.php?topic=2552.msg47230#msg47230

To these I might add:

Christian Science Monitor - http://www.csmonitor.com/

Associated Press - articles appear in many on-line services like Yahoo ( http://news.yahoo.com/ ) or newspaper like NY Times, LA Times, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune and others.  These newspapers are also online, but one must register - usually free.  The Washington Post should not be confused with the Washington Times, which is run by the Unification Church and expresses rather conservative views.

Reuters News Service - http://www.reuters.com/

Agence France-Presse - http://www.afp.fr/english/home/

US News & World Report - http://www.usnews.com/usnews/home.htm

Excellent, another Mother Jones reader  ;D

I hadn't discovered the World Press or Axis of Logic sites yet.  I'll check them out.  Thanks!

I also read the Christian Science monitor and material  from Reuters.  I'd also throw in NPR www.npr.org.

*not* trying to be flippant, but i really like: Al Jazeera...

 http://english.aljazeera.net/HomePage

They're more objective than people would like you to think. And sometimes editorials are interesting to see the news 'from the other side.'

And then there's The Moscow Times, sometimes scoring really high on the 'weird' scale, IMO...

http://www.themoscowtimes.com/indexes/01.html

And of course Google News, pick one story, read 200+ versions of it (of which 150+ are blatant copies, sigh...)

World Press and ChristianScienceMonitor are also on my list.

I always check Yahoo! Headlines and BBC first, the first always very quick with updates, the latter a good broad format, but lately quality of reporting going down the drain...

Rxke,
Its so important to see news "from the other side" - that's how we can each come up with a balanced viewpoint!  Always gotta keep broadening those horizons!

I usually got the English version of Asahi Shimbun when traveling in Japan.

http://www.asahi.com/english/english.htm

Also, please check http://www.worldpress.org/gateway.htm for international newspaper websites.  The gateway also provides some information on the political persuassion of some of the papers.

Not sure where to put this one - www.partialobserver.com - it's a mix of news, including politics, but it is largely interviews, editorials and opinions.

Seems to be a mixed bag.

I haven't checked it out thoroughly, since I only just discovered it - so reader beware!

Environmental news and humor.

http://www.grist.org/ - Politically green.

Definitely opposite of the Heritage Foundation (www.heritage.org) - very conservative site.

In addition to NPR, there is also PRI (Public Radio International) - www.pri.org,
http://www.pri.org/PublicSite/listeners/index.html

And if that's not enough, try Alternative Radio - very progressive or liberal:
http://www.alternativeradio.org/

Interviews with and commentaries by - Bill Moyers, Scott Ritter, Michael Moore, and others.

Katherine Harris calls Greg Palast, 'twisted and maniacle.' But Michael Moore calls his reporting for BBC television 'courageous.' And Noam Chomsky says: Greg Palast "upsets all the right people."

In England, Palast is known as, "the most important investigative reporter of our time" (Tribune Magazine, UK). But, his award-winning investigative reports for BBC television have been banned from us airwaves. His writings for Britain's Guardian have been stopped at the border.

Greg Palast is the author of the book, The Best Democracy Money Can Buy -- nearly one year on the New York Times best seller list - the special elections edition is released this month.

Palast is best known in the USA for his reports on the theft of the election in Florida and the connections between the Bush family and the Bin ladins which form the basis for Michael Moore's latest film.

" No one has uncovered more about the Bush dynasty than Greg Palast and lived to write about." (Baltimore Chronicle).

=========================================

http://www.gregpalast.com/

Palast is the author of the New York Times bestseller "The Best Democracy Money Can Buy," a book Michael Moore has called "courageous reporting."  He has uncovered fraud and corruption in the highest seats of power, exposing the back-room crimes and propaganda lies of the New World Order's robber barons-- from the pirates in the Oval Office to the corporate globalizers steamrolling the world over. Written in a no-holds-barred, in-your-face style, The Best Democracy Money Can buy is a must read for anyone who believes that the First Amendment is important enough to use and that democracy cannot be bought.

Greg Palast's writings have appeared in The Washington Post, Harper's, and The Nation. He's been a guest on Politically Incorrect, C-SPAN's Washington Journal, and does regular investigative reports for BBC's Newsnight. Winner of Salon.com's 2001 "Politics Story of the Year," Greg Palast is a legend among his colleagues and his devoted leadership worldwide. Palast earned his MBA from University of Chicago, where he studies under the tutelage of ultraconservative Nobel Prize winner Milton Friedman. A native of California, he divides his time between New York and London.

Known in Britain as "the greatest investigative reporter of our time" (Tribune magazine), Palast has broken some of the most infamous stories of the past decade, including:
- How the Bush family stole the election in Florida in 2000
- How Bush killed the FBI's investigation into the financing of terrorist
organizations by Saudi Arabia, and why
- How Enron cheated, lied, and swindled its way into an energy monopoly
- Groundbreaking reports on the World Bank, the IMF, the World Trade Organization, Wal-Mart and more.

Greg Palast reports the news he couldn't get the corporate media to cover.
==================================

He is probably one of the top 10 on Bush's Hit List (aka White House enemies list started by Nixon)
