Did you know?

The Platypus is stranger than you think.

Platypuses have no nipples.  After the young hatch, the mother oozes milk from the pores all over her body.

The male platypus has a poison barb on the inside of its hind legs.  The purpose of this weapon is uncertain.

While often compared to the beaver, the platypus is only about 20 inches in length -- more comparable to the size of the muskrat.

The Platypus bill is actually just an elongated muzzle covered with much the same kind of tough skin found on a dog's nose.  This bill contains an electrically-sensitive organ that can detect the electrical signatures of the small aquatic animals it eats.

I keep myself armed with a shortwave radio so I can get news broadcasts from other parts of the world, for it is way too dangerous to rely only on american popular trash media. Q

You'll have to judge for yourself about these groups - conservative, liberal or libertarian - probably a mix.

http://www.usbusiness.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=1

The United States Business and Industry Council (USBIC) and its affiliated research arm, the USBIC Educational Foundation (USBICEF), champion the interests of America's domestic family-owned and closely-held firms - "our nation's main street businesses" - which create new products, jobs and growth here in the United States.  The Council's mission is to expand our domestic economy, with particular emphasis on our manufacturing, processing, and fabricating industries, and through the resulting growth to extend a high standard of living to all Americans.  The Educational Foundation's mission is to provide research and support for the Council's mission and to expand the message of the small business community to our supporters, our nation's elected leaders, journalists, and college campuses.

http://www.americaneconomicalert.org/default.asp

AmericanEconomicAlert.org was founded by the U.S. Business and Industry Council Educational Foundation, a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit research and educational organization dedicated to improving the American people's awareness of critical public policy issues in such diverse fields as trade, taxation, education, health care, foreign relations, defense, and national security, among others. USBICEF is affiliated with the U.S. Business and Industry Council, a 501(c)(6) non-profit business association.

http://www.odemagazine.com/ - A magazine for intelligent optimists

Founders: Jurriaan Kamp, Hélène de Puy
Editor-in-chief: Jurriaan Kamp

Ode Magazine
Tiburon, CA 94920
98 Main Street, Suite 220
t: 1-888-Ode-Magazine
t/f: 1-888-633-6242
e: ode@odemagazine.com

Quote
Ode is an independent magazine about the people and ideas that are changing the world.

Sometimes it’s difficult to see beyond the war, poverty, exploitation and pollution that the mainstream media use to fill our view of the world. But there is more to life. There are other stories to report. Stories of countless initiatives being launched around the globe by people devoted to justice, respect and equality. Stories that bridge the gap between thinking and doing, between rage and hope, and the painful gap between the rich and poor – and thus build peace and sustainability. That is the news that Ode promises to deliver. By reading Ode you connect to a network of positive change and inspiration. Ode points the way to knowing better, doing better and feeling better.

Ode publishes ‘the stories that are different from the ones we are brainwashed to believe’ (Arundhati Roy). Ode challenges us and invites us to change. We realise that change starts with information. We can only make a choice to change things for the better when we learn how it can be done. Similarly, we can only change our behaviour when we understand the harmful effects of what we do. Ode teaches and inspires us, helps us see how every one of us can contribute to a more just and sustainable world.

Ode is published monthly in English, Dutch and Portuguese.

Orion Online

Another independent magazine/journal with a different perspective/outlook on the world.

http://www.oriononline.org/index2.html

Quote
Orion explores an emerging alternative world view. Informed by a growing ecological awareness and the need for cultural change, it is a forum for thoughtful and creative ideas and practical examples of how we might live justly, wisely, and artfully on Earth.

Since 1982, Orion has worked to reconnect human culture with the natural world, blending scientific thinking with the arts, engaging the heart and mind, and striving to make clear what we all have in common.

Orion publishes the work of the writers who are shaping a relationship between nature and a new emerging cultural ethic -- Barbara Kingsolver, Bill McKibben, Gary Paul Nabhan, Sandra Steingraber, David Quammen, Richard Nelson, Terry Tempest Williams, Barry Lopez, Robert Michael Pyle, Thomas Moore, David James Duncan, Wendell Berry, Scott Russell Sanders, Ann Zwinger, and others -- as well many new voices.

Orion also includes powerful visual images that blur the boundaries between the human and the natural, and challenge us to see our world from new perspectives. Each issue includes portfolios of paintings and photographs from artists like Frans Lanting, Galen Rowell, Sonya Bullaty, Wolf Kahn, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison, and Andy Goldsworthy.

Orion is published six times a year by The Orion Society and the Myrin Institute.

I have always found these sites a good source of factual news, especially in science; although usually not on a daily basis, more an overview. They offer many other facilities as well.

At some of the sites individual articles are subscription only but many are not; even then, abstracts can usually be accessed.

It is my belief that if I can access a webpage without logging in then anyone can; thus, if I point others to the site, without any copying, pasting or editing, then they can access it too. Obviously, further use of any content needs to be considered carefully.
