OK, I had to start a thread on moths.Â
Moths perhaps don't have the same reputation as butterflies for being elegant, delicate, beautiful or colorful, but if one looks at the hummingbird moth, one does discover that there are elegant, delicate, beautiful and colorful moths.
The USGS has a webpage devoted to Moths of North America
http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/resource/distr/lepid/moths/mothsusa.htmTwo of the largest groups are Sphingidae, which includes Sphinx and Hawk moths, and Arctiidae, which includes Lichen and Tiger moths. Many species do not have common names, which probably means the general human population ignores these creatures.
