"1927
Giant Panda discovered, China
"

(from the astrobio site)

really?? pandas were only discovered in 1927? I know they're shy, but still....

according to wiki... (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Panda)
"The Giant Panda was first made known to the West in 1869 by the French missionary Armand David, who received a skin from a hunter on 11 March 1869."
