Writing in Nature, the team says that the mechanism was "technically more complex than any known device for at least a millennium afterwards".

Hand cut bronze no less.  It would be great to find the documentation concerning its construction and how they picked the gear sizes and positions.

I like quote of Mike Edmunds, Cardiff University, "When you see it your jaw just drops and you think, 'bloody hell that's clever'."  Spoken like a true British scientist.  ;D

This really is an amazing discovery.  Hopefully there is enough left of it to recreate a working mock-up.

How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered?

There is a documentary about it I watched on "Planete" (the French-speaking Discovery Channel). It was one of 3 in a cycle called "Great discoveries of Ancient Times", the 2 others were medicals and warfare weapons (geeez, these Romans were crazy: talk about war machine!)

Impressive indeed!

The popular stereotype of the researcher is that of a skeptic and a pessimist. Nothing could be further from the truth! Scientists must be optimists at heart, in order to block out the incessant chorus of those who say "It cannot be done."
