Before about 5.4 x 10^-44 s (the planck time) it is meaningless to talk about what happened, because that is the smallest unit of time that we can meaningfully talk about. Before the big bang, it's meaningless to talk about, because time did not exist then, as it was created with the big bang.
At the plank tine, the universe's radius was somewhere between 1.6 x 10^-35 m and 1.6 x 10^-33 m (speed of light times the plank time, and 100 times the speed of light times the plank time).
So, it's really meaningless to talk about the universe before it was about this big.
